Today is World AIDS Day, and this marks the opening of media registration for the 22nd International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2018), to be held on 23-27 July in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The AIDS 2018 pre-conference will be held on 21 and 22 July.
The AIDS 2018 Media Scholarship Programme is accepting applications until 1 February 2018. Limited media scholarships are available for journalists and community educators with a demonstrated record of HIV reporting and who would not otherwise be able to attend AIDS 2018. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Click here for more information and to apply for the AIDS 2018 Media Scholarship Programme.
AIDS 2018 is the largest international gathering on any health issue in the world, gathering more than 15,000 global leaders, policy makers, researchers, journalists and advocates from more than 160 countries. First convened during the peak of the AIDS epidemic in 1985, the International AIDS Conference has been at the centre of some of the major moments in global health history.
Accredited journalists, photographers, videographers and community educators will have complementary registration for AIDS 2018. The media programme includes daily press briefings, ongoing story development and interview support from global experts and the media staff, and access to the dedicated media centre. Registered media will receive a document on conference highlights and briefing materials before the conference. Click here to register as AIDS 2018 media.
The theme of AIDS 2018 is Breaking Barriers Building Bridges, drawing attention to the need of rights-based approaches to more effectively reach key populations, including in Eastern Europe and Central Asia and the North African/Middle Eastern regions, which are home to the fastest growing HIV/AIDS epidemics in the world. When HIV/AIDS first appeared as a public health threat in the 1980s, the Netherlands faced the challenge head on and was a leader in embracing scientific evidence and working with marginalized and stigmatized populations to respond to the epidemic. Today, Amsterdam is a “Fast Track City” that has committed itself to accelerating action to ensure that the world can reach the ambitious target of ending AIDS by 2030.
The AIDS 2018 programme includes:
- Hundreds of research presentations featuring the year’s breaking science on prevention, treatment and cure research
- High-level speakers
- In-depth insights on the most current health issues on the global agenda.
Please be sure to register in advance as media space is limited and accreditation is not guaranteed. Online media registration closes at the same time that AIDS 2018 online registration closes in mid-July. Programme and speaker announcements and other key highlights will be shared over the next eight months leading up to the conference, and your registration guarantees timely access to those news announcements.
If you have questions, an interview request, or are interested to know more on a particular topic, the AIDS 2018 Media team at [email protected] or visit the AIDS 2018 online media centre.
